Jamie and X coming to Eureka.

It may be awkward for X-23 and Jamie, transitioning from Milliways to Eureka. SARAH herself does not notice much of anything when she moves back and forth, but she advised her two guests to sit down on the living room couch before they left the bar.

"Exterior sensors have resumed function," SARAH announces. "Welcome to Eureka."

X opens her eyes, breathing still carefully regulated.

Meditation helps with motion sicknesss and disorientation, apparently.

"You are okay, Jamie?"

Jamie, well accustomed to the odd twitch-in-his-stomach feeling of crossing universes, offers a reassuring grin.

"Fit as a fiddle. You?"

"I am okay, too."

Beat.

"There is no one outside, SARAH?"

"No.

"There is also no alternate forms of transportation available this far from town. I hope walking is acceptable."

Suddenly, it occurs that it might have been better to mention this earlier.

"I never got on well with horses anyways," Jamie says, only a little wistful - he's well used to walking everywhere he goes.

(Though trains are always nice.)

X offers a quick one-shouldered shrug.

"I do not mind."

She may already be starting to head for the door.

"Wait."

A wall panel close to Jamie recesses itself; a small shelf moves forward on its track. Two devices, no wider than two fingers and each with an important-looking button on the left, are revealed.

"Take them -- just press the button to call me if I can help with anything.

"Thank you."

"No worries," Jamie tells her, with another grin, and snatches up both devices before darting to catch up with X. He passes one over and shoves the other one into the pockets of his nondescript khaki pants.

"We'll check in every so often, all right? So you won't have to fret."

X pauses a moment.

"Yes."

Beat.

"I do not want you to worry."

It is still an alien thought, but--

SARAH opens the heavy steel door, allowing X and Jamie to pass.

"Good luck."

They head out, emerging into the clearing. Jamie looks around, noting the fence and the road beyond - not the most cheerful view, maybe, but could be worse.

Another important thing to note: nobody else around. Jamie turns to X, as they walk, and says, "We're going to need a reason to be in town, in case anyone asks us. You can follow my lead on that; I've done this loads."

"Our mother is looking to move into Eureka Gardens. She told us to go to the diner to get food, and we got lost."

Hey, X is good at this, too.

"Yes, that ought to work," Jamie says - a bit disgruntled at having lost the lead, but he's got plenty of knowledge to give away. "Nice job," he adds kindly, to imply that Laura is coming along very nicely in the opinion of the master.

"There's no reason not to use our own names, really. Would you mind being Hamilton, or is there a surname you'd rather?"

"It will be easier for you."

Beat.

"It is okay."

Jamie shrugs, amiably enough.

"I've used plenty. It doesn't much matter."

X offers a one-shouldered shrug and keeps walking.

Eventually--

"Should I start chewing the gum now?"

Jamie blinks, not quite sure what this has to do with the topic at hand.

"Did SARAH tell you chewing was a common custom in Eureka?" he hazards.

"No."

Beat.

"But I have seen teenagers chewing it before."

A second, longer pause.

"And Lilly said it was okay."

"Good enough, if this world is like hers," Jamie says, a little doubtfully.

He'd rather get in and see the customs for himself, but to each their own. (And SARAH has assured him that his pants and t-shirt are quite usual clothing for her time period.)

X just shrugs again, and starts chewing the gum.

She also fights the urge to tuck her button-down shirt into her pants.

The flapping is getting annoying. At least the tank top is comfortable.

They walk a little further, Jamie glancing around at the forest until it starts to slope down and open up - you never know what's going to come at you out of a forest.

Eventually he can see the town in front of them. He can see people, too.

He turns to X and says, "All right, you're sure you remember the directions Mum gave us?"

Aside from the slip of 'Mum', he's mimicking X's accent fairly well.

"Yes."

X nods, just once.

"I have a very good memory."

This is not a lie.

And if she chooses to take them by the cafe--it's only so their story makes sense.

And it's on the way.

"You don't need to brag about it," Jamie says, doing a good job of sounding irritated.

(Jamie remembers how to be a brother very well.)

The lunch rush is subsiding quickly and Vincent's glad of it.

Hearing the two new arrivals outside of Café Diem, Vincent waves them in from outside. "Just sit down anywhere; I'll take your order in a minute."

X's eyes widen a little, then she shrugs.

"Okay. Thanks."

She looks at Jamie.

"Don't be picky. I'm hungry."
